The Educational Needs and Communication Difficulties of School-Aged Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder as Perceived by Personal Assistants for the Disabled

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the current issue of personal assistant for the disabled by their personal experience of communication difficulties with ASDs and their needs for the educational supports. Accordingly, an analysis was conducted in-depth interviews with 9 personal assistants for the disabled. Four primary themes and nine sub-themes emerged from qualitative analysis: (1) Experience of personal assistants: motivation for the work, job lists and satisfaction, also difficulties, (2) Perception of language, communicative skill and behaviors: difficulties with language and social communication, experience of ASDs behavior, (3) Reactions to communicative difficulties with clients: reacting and problem solving for the communication difficulties, experiences of useful supports, and (4) Needs of the educational supports for problem solving for the communication difficulties: experience of education and satisfaction of education, needs of the educational supports. We suggest that personal assistants need more understanding and social supports by ASD¡¯s family and professional educational supports.
